THE WEEKEND 34 ROAD TRIP

Moving forward until the end of 2024, Dave Nemo Weekends brought to you by Odyssey Battery is adding a wrinkle into its normal programming.

Along with our regular features and remarkable guests, the show is going to focus on road trips. Both guests and callers will be asked to map out a 10 to 14 day journey across the continental United States.

Our ask is simple. Just start with the where and the why. We're asking you to draw a line from point A to point B and explain the purpose of the trip. The devil, of course, will come in the details. Those details are where further shows will take us.

We introduced this topic on the air in the middle of July while in San Juan, Puerto Rico. During that show, regular callers Jody and Trucker Bosun took approaches from opposite sides of the coin. For Jody, it was a where being followed by a why. He wanted to roll (Bob Seger style) from Michigan and onto the Eastern Seaboard. He thought visiting veterans' museums throughout his route would serve as good mile markers. Essentially, head east and learn about the folks who have served our country.

In the case of Trucker Bosun, his journey was about a fascination with a particular type of necessary but unique architecture: lighthouses. The geographical options for a two-week tour of shoreline beacons are multitudinous. Now, he's got to figure out where he wants to go. Does he move across the Gulf Coast? Or perhaps circumnavigate the Great Lakes? It need not be an entire region, because Maine alone could easily create a full dance card of destinations.

As alluded to earlier, this topic won't just end with the where and the why. Future shows and conversations will include how you pack, the snacks you purchase both before and during the trip, places to stop to eat, entertainment you bring along to pass the time, and that all crucial question of whether your journey is a solo effort or if your quest has company along the way.

SiriusXM 146 Road Dog Trucking's listeners are the perfect audience for this conversation. As truckers, you know the road. But we're not talking about being truckers. We're discussing, reminding, and reconnecting you to all the other things you are. Phish Heads, crypto zoologists, storm chasers, leaf peepers, literary cartographers, fervid foodies, easy riders, baseball aficionados, and amateur historians are among the many identities awaiting to be reclaimed or discovered on the American road.

Planning a road trip is planning hope. Let's use The Weekend 34 to plan some hope together.
